The Central Minnesota OCD Support Group is a confidential, first name only group. We welcome those who have been diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, as well as anyone who is experiencing OCD symptoms. Our group is open to family members and friends also and there is no cost to attend. Knowledge, sharing, & caring are 3 things our group offers to members. We are also dedicated to more public awareness and education about this disorder, which affects more than 3 million people and is more common than asthma or diabetes.
We meet weekly, and on a month that has 5 weeks, we meet at a local restaurant to socialize.
Our meetings include member involvment by sharing our OCD experiences, and all things within the group are confidential. We also provide books about OCD and study them together as a group to better understand OCD and ways to try and overcome this disorder.
The Central Minnesota OCD Support Group is supported by the St.Cloud National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and also by the CentraCare Health Foundation.
Many of our members recognized that they had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder as children but were not diagnosed or treated until later in life. As a result, we currently are preparing a program to be presented by members to local school districts to further OCD awareness. Our goal is to reach teachers, counselors, parents, & children so they may be able to detect possible OCD in their students/children and hopefully these children will get an early diagnosis and be able to recieve treatment for this disorder while they are young.
Our group has developed a "Member Mentor" system to help each other through difficult times. Participation in the "Member Mentor" system is voluntary. We also have a lending library of books, films, and dvds about OCD for member use.
Our goals are to provide a safe, confidential, and caring place for people with OCD and their familes to meet and share and learn more about OCD.
This group is facilitated by Dr. Sandra Chesborough LICSW, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Social Work at St. Cloud State University.
